Is There Uber, InDrive, or Careem at Tangier Airport?

Find out which ride-hailing apps work in Tangier, Morocco. Does Uber exist? How to use InDrive and Careem from the airport.

Guide Summary

It is one of the most frequent questions from travelers landing in Morocco: “Can I simply order an Uber when exiting the airport?”.

In Tangier, as in the rest of Morocco, the ride-hailing app landscape is a bit unique. Here is everything you need to know to get around easily without having to negotiate fares on the street.

Does Uber Work in Tangier?

The short answer is no.

Uber left Morocco in 2018 following conflicts with local taxi unions. If you open your Uber app in Tangier, you will simply see an empty map with the message “No cars available”. Therefore, do not rely on Uber for your trips.

However, nature abhors a vacuum, and other apps have stepped up with great success!

InDrive (formerly inDriver) is currently the most widely used ride-hailing app in Morocco, and Tangier is no exception.

How Does It Work?

Unlike Uber where an algorithm sets the price, InDrive operates on a bidding system.

  1. You enter your pickup location and destination.
  2. The app suggests a base fare, which you can adjust (higher or lower).
  3. Nearby drivers receive your offer and can accept it, decline it, or send a counteroffer.
  4. You choose your driver based on their price, rating, and distance.

Payment

On InDrive in Morocco, payment is made strictly in cash directly to the driver at the end of the ride. Make sure to have small change ready (20 or 50 MAD banknotes).

2. Careem: The “Classic” Alternative

Careem (which was acquired by Uber) operates in several major Moroccan cities, including Tangier.

How it works is identical to Uber: you request a ride, the price is estimated by the app, and a driver comes to pick you up. You can pay in cash or via a credit/debit card saved in the app. Careem is generally slightly more expensive than InDrive, but offers a standardized service.

Can You Take a Ride-Hailing App (InDrive/Careem) from Tangier Airport?

Pay attention, this is where it gets tricky.

The “Grands Taxis” unions (the official white airport taxis) hold an exclusive monopoly on passenger pickups outside the terminal exit.

  • If you order an InDrive or Careem from the terminal: Ride-hailing drivers are not allowed to enter airport grounds to pick you up. Most will reject the ride out of fear of confrontations with taxi drivers, or will message you asking you to walk outside the airport gates (about a 10 to 15-minute walk with luggage to the main roundabout) so they can pick you up discreetly.
  • For the return trip (City Center -> Airport): There is no issue at all. An InDrive or Careem can drop you off directly at the airport terminal. Only the “pickup” at the airport is restricted.

Our Advice for the Airport

If you have just landed with luggage, we advise against trying to use a ride-hailing app to leave the airport. It often leads to unnecessary stress, cancellations, and forces you to walk along the road.

Choose between these two reliable options instead:

  1. Official Grands Taxis: They are parked right outside the terminal exit, and fares to the city center are fixed (displayed on an official board, around 100 MAD during daytime).
  2. A Pre-booked Private Transfer: For maximum comfort and fixed upfront pricing, a professional driver will meet you inside the terminal holding a sign with your name. It is the perfect VIP alternative to “Uber”, with none of the hassle or conflicts with local taxis!

For everyday trips within the city of Tangier, however, InDrive and blue Petits Taxis (insisting on the meter) will be your best options.
