Tangier Airport to City Center: All Transport Options

Discover how to reach the city center from Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport. Prices for taxis, buses, private transfers, and car rentals.

Guide Summary

Tangier Ibn Battouta International Airport (TNG) is located approximately 15 kilometers southwest of the bustling city center of Tangier. Whether you are traveling for business, discovering the historic medina, or stopping over before visiting northern Morocco, choosing the right mode of transport is essential for a good start to your stay.

In this comprehensive and updated guide, we compare all available options for the Tangier Airport - City Center journey: rates, duration, comfort, advantages, and disadvantages.

1. Private Transfer: The Most Relaxing Option

For travelers seeking absolute comfort after a tiring flight, booking a private airport transfer is undoubtedly the best solution. It is the preferred choice for families, business travelers, and those arriving late at night.

  • Comfort and Security: A professional driver waits for you directly in the arrivals hall with a sign bearing your name. You don’t have to look for a taxi or negotiate under the sun.
  • Fixed Price: No surprises or rate negotiations upon arrival. The price is known and paid in advance (usually between 20€ and 25€ per trip for a standard vehicle).
  • Exact Drop-off: Unlike traditional grand taxis, the private driver will drop you exactly at your hotel door. If you are staying in the Medina (a fully pedestrian zone), the driver will drop you at the nearest access point and can even contact your Riad so someone comes to help you with your luggage.

Travel Tip: We strongly recommend this option if you land after 9 PM. Traffic in Tangier can be heavy, and finding a reliable taxi at night sometimes requires patience.

2. Taking a “Grand Taxi” (The Traditional Choice)

Right outside the terminal of Ibn Battouta airport, you will find an official Grand Taxis stand. Historically, these were indestructible old Mercedes, but they have fortunately been replaced by modern Dacia Lodgys or minivans (often cream or yellow in Tangier). This is the transport method most used by locals.

How much is a taxi from the airport to the city center?

Prices are officially set and regulated by ONDA (displayed on the large board outside the terminal exit):

  • Daytime (05:30 AM - 10:30 PM): Official flat fare of 100 MAD (around €10) to the city center and Tanger-Ville railway station.
  • Nighttime (10:30 PM - 05:30 AM): Official fare with the legal 50% night surcharge, bringing it to 150 MAD (around €15).

Attention: Bring cash (Dirhams). Taxis in Morocco almost never accept credit cards.

3. Renting a Car at the Airport

If your trip is not limited to Tangier’s city center and you plan to explore the beautiful northern region (the beaches of Asilah, the blue city of Chefchaouen, or the Tetouan mountains), renting a car at Tangier airport is the most economical and flexible long-term solution.

The desks of major international rental agencies (Avis, Hertz, Sixt, Europcar) and local ones (AirCar, Trocadero) are located directly in the arrivals hall. The drive to the city center via the Aviation Road (N1) is very simple, well-signposted, and takes about 20 to 25 minutes depending on traffic. Don’t forget to book online in advance during the summer, as stocks run out quickly.

4. The Aerobus (ALSA Shuttle): The Economical Option

Good news for travelers! Recently, Ibn Battouta Airport is connected to the city center by a dedicated shuttle service: the Aerobus (Line AE), operated by the urban transport company ALSA.

  • Price: 40 MAD (about 4€) per person, payable in cash directly to the driver.
  • Where to catch it: The bus stop is located right outside the arrivals terminal.
  • Schedule: The shuttle runs approximately every hour, with departures from 6:00 AM until 11:30 PM.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How long does it take to reach the city center?

By taxi, private transfer, or rental car, the journey generally takes between 20 and 30 minutes, depending on traffic conditions on the N1 national road and the time of day.

Can I use Uber, InDrive, or Careem at Tangier airport?

Uber is not active in Tangier. Apps like Careem and InDrive exist, but due to regulatory reasons and taxi union monopolies, their drivers are generally not allowed to pick up passengers inside the airport premises. You risk repeated cancellations. Stick to official taxis or private transfers.

Is it possible to pay for the taxi in Euros?

Some taxi drivers will accept Euro bills to help you out, but the exchange rate applied will be very disadvantageous for you. It is highly recommended to withdraw Moroccan Dirhams (MAD) at the ATMs located in the airport arrivals hall before exiting.
