Guide Summary
Many travelers landing at Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport ask themselves the exact same question: How do I take the train from Tangier to Chefchaouen?
The short answer is very simple: There is no train to Chefchaouen.
The famous “Blue Pearl” is nestled deep in the heart of the Rif Mountains, a geographically challenging area where the Moroccan railway network (ONCF) has not laid any tracks. The closest train station is in Tangier (Tanger Ville) or Souk El Arbaa, but neither will take you directly to the gates of Chefchaouen.
But don’t panic! Fortunately, several excellent alternatives exist to cover the 110 kilometers separating Tangier and Chefchaouen.
1. Private Transfer: The Comfortable Choice (Recommended)
If you arrive tired from the airport, the best option is to book a private transfer.
A professional driver will wait for you directly in the arrivals hall holding a sign with your name. The journey takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes and will drop you as close as possible to your accommodation in Chefchaouen. It is the ideal solution if you have heavy luggage or if you are traveling with family or a group.
2. Bus (CTM): The Budget Option
If you are traveling on a tighter budget, the Moroccan bus network is very reliable. The CTM company offers several daily departures from the Tangier bus station to Chefchaouen.
- Price: Around 50 to 70 MAD (5 to 7 €).
- Duration: About 2h45 to 3h00.
- Drawback: You first need to take a taxi from the airport to the CTM bus station in downtown Tangier, and then upon arrival, take another small taxi to climb up to the Chefchaouen medina.
3. Rent a Car: Total Freedom
If you plan to visit other cities in the north (like Tetouan, Asilah, or Akchour), renting a car at Tangier airport is a fantastic idea. The N2 national road connecting Tangier to Chefchaouen is in good condition and offers breathtaking mountainous landscapes along the way.
4. Grand Taxi: The Local Experience
“Grand Taxis” (shared taxis, usually Dacia Lodgys or old Mercedes cars) connect Tangier to Chefchaouen. You will need to go to the main Grand Taxi rank in Tangier. It is economical (about 70 MAD per seat), but you will have to wait until all 6 seats are filled before departure, which can sometimes take a while.
Summary
Forget the train myth! To get to Chefchaouen from Tangier:
- Choose a private transfer for immediate comfort straight from the airport.
- Opt for a car rental if you want to explore the region freely.
- Take the CTM bus to save money.
