Tangier Ibn Battouta International Airport (TNG) is undergoing an unprecedented modernization. With over 1.4 million passengers recorded in the first half of 2026 and rapid economic growth in Northern Morocco, the airport is approaching the limits of its current terminal.

Ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup co-hosted by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal, the Moroccan Airports Authority (ONDA) has launched a strategic infrastructure upgrade to transform Tangier into a world-class gateway.

Here is an overview of what the expansion includes and how it will improve the passenger experience.

1. Why is Tangier Airport Expanding?

Over the past decade, Tangier has evolved from a regional port city into Morocco’s second economic powerhouse, driven by the Tanger Med port, automotive manufacturing zones, and high-speed rail connections.

The current passenger terminal was built to comfortably handle around 1.25 to 1.5 million passengers annually. Having exceeded 2 million visitors last year, modernizing passport control areas, boarding gates, and baggage handling systems became an urgent priority.

2. Key Highlights of the Expansion

The ONDA master plan focuses on three core pillars:

A New 40,000 m² Terminal

  • Capacity Increase: The new terminal will expand overall airport capacity to over 3.5 million passengers per year, with future scaling up to 5 million by 2035.
  • Green Architecture: The facility is designed to meet strict eco-friendly standards, featuring natural daylighting, solar energy panels, and smart HVAC systems.
  • Enhanced Commercial Space: New duty-free zones, authentic Moroccan dining options, and expanded business lounges.

Runway and Apron Upgrades

  • More Aircraft Stands: Expanding the tarmac from 10 to 18 aircraft parking positions, accommodating both medium-haul and wide-body long-haul jets.
  • Taxiway Extensions: Improved ground circulation to reduce runway waiting times during peak traffic periods.

Landside and Parking Improvements

  • 1,500+ Parking Spaces: Tripling existing vehicle capacity with dedicated short-stay and long-term parking areas.
  • Streamlined Drop-off: Dedicated passenger lanes for official Grand Taxis, ALSA airport buses, and hotel shuttles to eliminate curbside congestion.

3. What Travelers Should Know During Construction

For visitors flying into Tangier in 2026 and 2027:

  • Flights Operate Normally: Commercial flight schedules and airline check-ins continue without disruption.
  • Clear Signage: Temporary shaded walkways guide passengers between the terminal exit, the official taxi rank, and rental car pick-up lots.
  • Arrival Advice: Arrive at the airport at least 2.5 hours prior to your international departure during peak summer months and holiday weekends.
