SIM Cards in Morocco: Operators & Offers at the Airport

Maroc Telecom, Orange, Inwi: which mobile operator to choose upon arrival in Tangier and how to activate 4G/5G on your phone?

Guide Summary

Having a reliable internet connection on your smartphone as soon as you arrive in Morocco is no longer a luxury, it’s an absolute necessity. Whether using Google Maps during your car rental, finding the driver for your airport transfer, or translating menus in the medina, 4G will save the day.

At Tangier Ibn Battouta airport, getting a SIM card is an extremely fast process. Here is everything you need to know to choose the right operator and avoid roaming charges.

The 3 major Moroccan operators

The telecommunications market in Morocco is divided among three major players. They all offer free or nearly free prepaid SIMs (around 20 to 30 MAD for the card itself), which you can then top up with “Data” (Internet).

1. Maroc Telecom (IAM) - The best coverage

This is the historic operator and market leader in Morocco.

  • Major Advantage: They have the best network coverage in the country. If you plan to travel to very remote areas, trek in the Atlas Mountains, or visit small coastal villages far from Tangier, this is the mandatory choice.
  • Disadvantage: Their shops are sometimes very busy, and wait times can be slightly longer.

2. Orange Morocco - The tourist favorite

Orange is well-established and offers excellent 4G/4G+ coverage in all major cities (Tangier, Tetouan, Rabat, Casablanca).

  • Major Advantage: They specifically target European tourists with very clear “Tourist Passes”, often displayed in Euros and Gigabytes (GB), which are easy to understand.
  • Disadvantage: Network coverage sometimes drops off faster than Maroc Telecom as soon as you venture deep into the Rif valleys.

3. Inwi - The economical challenger

Inwi is known in Morocco for its aggressive marketing campaigns and favorable mobile data rates for youth.

  • Major Advantage: Excellent regular promotions offering more gigabytes for the same price as its competitors.
  • Disadvantage: Slightly inferior rural coverage, although perfect within the city of Tangier.

How to buy and activate your SIM card at the airport?

  1. Location: After collecting your luggage and passing through customs, you will enter the public arrivals hall. You will immediately see the colorful kiosks of the operators (blue for Maroc Telecom, black/orange for Orange, purple for Inwi).
  2. Documents: Moroccan law requires SIM card identification. You will need to present your physical passport to the salesperson. They will make a copy or take a photo of it for registration.
  3. Top-up (Recharge): Explicitly ask for an Internet/Data top-up. In Morocco, this is often called a “Recharge Etoile 3” (*3). Generally, expect to pay 10 MAD (1€) for 1 GB of internet valid for a month. A 100 MAD (10€) bill will thus give you 10 GB, which is more than enough for a week’s vacation.
  4. Activation: Let the salesperson insert the SIM and configure the APN settings on your phone before leaving the counter. Test that the internet works by loading a webpage.

The Modern Alternative: eSIM

If your smartphone is compatible with eSIM technology (iPhone 11 and above, Samsung Galaxy S20+, recent Google Pixels), you can skip the airport kiosks entirely!

Thanks to global apps like Airalo, Holafly, or Nomad, you can buy a virtual data plan from home before even boarding the plane.

  • How does it work? You scan a QR code received by email, and your phone integrates the Moroccan plan.
  • Advantage: As soon as the plane lands on the tarmac in Tangier, you activate the eSIM in your settings and get instant 4G. Perfect for ordering a driver before you even collect your luggage.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Will my European/US plan work in Morocco?

Danger warning! Morocco is not in the European Union (no free roaming). If you use 4G from your home plan, you will be billed at exorbitant rates (sometimes 10€ to 15€ per megabyte!). Absolutely disable the "Data Roaming" option in your phone settings before landing.

Does WhatsApp work with a Moroccan SIM card?

Yes, absolutely. If you insert a Moroccan SIM, WhatsApp will ask if you want to keep your old number. Answer "Yes". You will continue to send messages and make VoIP calls with your usual number, using the internet from the new SIM card.

Is there free Wi-Fi at Tangier airport?

Yes, Ibn Battouta Airport offers a free Wi-Fi network in the terminal. You just need to accept the terms of use on the login page. It's sufficient for sending a message upon arrival, but it doesn't replace a SIM card for the rest of your trip.
